Bendigo Cup Day didn't make too much of a dent in the numbers for the Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series Criteriums at East Bendigo this morning, with 24 riders fronting up including try rider Tanya Goddard.
The small A Grade field was whittled down to three and then two riders over the last half of the race with Brendan Schultz a convincing winner - despite a big ride this morning - from Martin Banfield, with Brent Gibson running third. B Grade lost a few early, then Darren Jones, Ric Richard Mcintosh and Leon Yeates got away and stayed away. Leon lost contact with a few laps to go, allowing Darren to rack up his second B Grade crit in a row (c.f. handicapper). Ric was a gallant second and Leon held the rest at bay to take third. The C Grade race was the pick of the day, the whole field more or less intact until the final lap despite numerous efforts to get away. David Boak showed glimpses of his return to form with a good sprint victory from an equally impressive Tom de Vries. Try rider Tanya Goddard was next over the line in a great debut, but had to cede her placing on the podium to new member James Rowe. The D Grade field delivered another good contest despite lack of numbers. Wendy Bennett tried to shake the others loose on the last lap climb, and when that tactic failed she resorted to good old-fashioned sprinting ability to take the points from Aileen O'Brien and Gary Johnstone.
