The 2019/20 Dale Lowe Signs Summer Series was wrapped up today in great style.
A bumper field of 34 riders lined up in perfect conditions back at Emu Creek for a 31 km handicap, a pleasant change from the crits. There was an outside chance the men's aggregate could be snatched from the leader Brendan Schultz but in contrast the women's aggregate was on the line with only a point or two separating the first three, so there were two little races going on inside the main event. The handicapper opted for small time gaps and big bunches. Scratch took off at a scorching pace which saw them catch second scratch at the halfway mark and third a couple of kilometers later. They maintained the pace back along Axe Creek Road, shelling riders left, right and centre, and only Darren Lapthorne and Brendan Schultz were left when they turned at the Exchange. Darren's only chance to make ground in the aggregate was to shake off Darren. They whistled past the combined 7 and 12 minute groups, leaving just the 16s out in front to battle on by themselves. The leading duo hit the front with three kilometres to go. The rest of scratch and second fought on behind them, picking up some of the sevens at the top of the Exchange - including Jenny Geyer who was in the hunt for the aggregate. Brendan and Darren hit the finishing straight with no-one else in sight, Brendan winning the sprint comfortably. The remaining sixteen minute bunch riders had had a great ride but had their hearts broken in the last few hundred metres when Charlie Fitzpatrick (scr.), Darren Jones (2nd) and Jo Stolz (scr) came past them to claim the next three places and finishing just in front of Gary Johnstone (16 min) in 6th. Jenny Geyer (6 min) reaped the rewards of training with Brad and held the wheels to run 7th with Russ Gilbey (7 min) on the comeback trail in 8th, Di Jane (16 min) in 9th and Peter Ladd Snr (7 min) in 10th.
Jenny Geyer's great ride today gave her just enough points to take out the Women's Aggregate ahead of Hayley Walker and Cheryle Barker. Brendan Schultz won the men's aggregate from Darren Lapthorne and Martin Banfield.
Thanks once again to Dale Lowe Signs and the other sponsors of the Summer Series.
